Nami Island Overview
Nami Island History
Nami Island sits in the middle of the Han River and was formed when the Cheongpyeong Dam was built in 1944. Nami Island is named after General Nami, who is believed to have died in this location during the reign of King Sejo (~1455 – 1468) in the Josean dynasty. His remains have never been found.
Nami Island is quite large, with an area of approximately 114 acres or 462,000 square meters. The island is covered with beautiful chestnut and poplar trees, and many art and recreation activities are available.
You can visit Nami Island all year round, with amazing cherry blossoms in Spring, lush greenery in Summer, fall foliage in Autumn and snow in Winter.
You could easily spend a few hours, a half day or full day exploring Nami Island. Fun things to do in Nami Island include the activities detailed below.

Nami Island Zipline
The Nami Island Zipline is one of the top adventurous activities to experience in South Korea! I speak from personal experience that this is an amazing experience where you travel on the 940m long zipline from Nami Island Wharf to Nami Island from the top of an 80m / 262 ft high tower across the Han River at speeds up to 56 km/hr or 35 mph! Your zipline ticket includes your entry fee to Nami Island and your return ferry transfer.

Nami Island Attractions
There is a lot to see and do on Nami Island as detailed below:
- Nami Island Forested Pathways. Nami Island is criss-crossed with beautiful tree lined pathways lined with chestnut, poplar, pine, gingko and giant redwood trees.
- Nami Island Artwork. Along each pathway you will experience a great variety of unique artwork and sights.
- Trains. You can ride either the Story Train or Unicef Mini Train to get around the island and learn more about the history of the island.
- Gongsaengwon Garden (The Winter Sonata Statue). Gongsaengwon Garden is located at the south eastern side of Nami Island and within this garden you can find the statue of Min-hyeong and Yoo-jin, the major characters from the Winter Sonata popular Korean drama show.
- Nami Island Bike Rental. A great option to get around Nami Island is to rent a bike and then just explore! The Bike Hire centre is located in the centre of Nami Island, and a large selection of bikes are available for hire. Note that bicycle hire is weather dependant.
- Nami Island Rail Bike. There is a fun small railbike called the Sky Bike Nami Island which is a great option for families to pedal along an elevated track.
- Nami Island Animal Encounters. Nami Island is home to an interesting selection of animals and birds. Roaming free around the island are peacocks, rabbits and squirrels. Inside an enclosure are also ostriches! A long way from their home climate…
- Nami Island Forest Adventure. The Nami Island Forest Adventure is a great rope course up high in the trees, which also includes a short zipline.
- Nami Island Restaurants. You will be happy to learn that there are a large selection of restaurant options on the island as well as in the Nami Island Wharf area. The selection of food ranges from traditional to modern Korean food. They also have western and broader Asian food including Halal food options.

Gapyeong Rail Bike
The experience of a Korean rail bike is unique in the world – you get to ride along a unused section of rail track by pedalling. All seats in each rail bike have pedals so everyone can help, and you can choose either a 2 or 4 seat rail bike. I was relieved to discover that for uphill sections there is an electric booster system – once you have worked out how to start it you can then relax and stop pedalling up the hill – otherwise it would have been very hard work!

Gangchon Rail Bike
The Rail Bike Gangchon is another great option to experience the unique Korean style rail bikes. You will get to ride in either a two or four seater rail bike along the old rail tracks beside the Bukhangang River and pass through three tunnels.
There is an additional option to hire VR Goggles to have a VR experience as you ride through the third tunnel, but be aware that this equipment gets booked out quickly.
The Garden of Morning Calm
The Garden of Morning Calm is an absolutely beautiful garden to visit, nestled in the valley amongst the mountains. In each season there is something different to see – cherry blossoms in spring and autumn foliage colours. During winter they put on an amazing illumination show which is well worth seeing.
The gardens are extensive with 27 different themed garden areas to explore.

Petite France Seoul
Petite France in Korea is a fun French themed location to visit in Gapyeong. You can easily spend a few hours exploring the village, which is filled with fun museums and art, go on a short nature walk through the forest and also watch a puppet show.

Alpaca World
Alpaca World is a fun location for families where you can see Alpacas and many other animals such as deer, camels, goats, sheep, ostriches and other birds. Add on activities available for an extra fee include riding on the Alpaca Safari Train, walking with alpacas and feeding the animals.
Skiing and Snowboarding near Nami Island
In winter you can purchase some great day tour packages which combine a visit to Nami Island with a skiing or snow boarding experience at either the Vivaldi Ski Resort or the Elysian Ski Resort which are located in close proximity.
Seoraksan National Park
Seoraksan National Park is one of the most popular National Parks in South Korea and is located a three hour drive west from Seoul. Mt Seorak is the third highest mountain in South Korea and was also the filming location for ‘Winter Sonata’, a very famous Korean drama TV series. There is a cable car you can catch up near the top of the mountain (note that this activity is weather dependant) and a selection of short hiking trails and attractions to explore.

Check out the below map to see where the attractions are in relation to each other.
